FTP Connection Problems

One of the most common problems for not being able to access your FTP site is a firewall, proxy server or other device blocking access to the required ports. FTP uses a number of ports to communicate, normally ports 21 and 20. Some FTP software tries to use another set of ports for FTP, this is known as Passive or PASV FTP connections. It’s this later type that is normally blocked.

Your FTP software should allow you to disable the Passive (PASV) FTP connections which should resolve your problems. To disable PASV on your software check the with software help file or technical support service. Following is an example of how to disable PASV on Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 6:

> Open Internet Explorer.

> Click Tools, then Internet Options

> Now select the tab Advanced

> Scroll down the list of settings until you find “Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility)” and UNTICK the box.

> Now close all browser windows and open it again.
